Professor Scholefield was Professor of Surgery, Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon and Head of Academic GI Surgery at Queens Medical Centre until October 2017, when he left the NHS. He now continues as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon in private practice and Medicolegal practice. He has been awarded the title of “Emeritus Professor” by the University of Nottingham.

Professor Scholefield trained in Surgery in Sheffield and later specialising in colorectal surgery at St Mark’s Hospital London. He has been a Consultant Surgeon for 24 years in Nottingham.

Professor Scholefield is well known nationally and internationally for his research in colorectal cancer screening, anal fissures and anal cancer. He has published over 120 peer reviewed papers in Surgical journals and edited or co-edited six textbooks on colorectal surgery.

Professor Scholefield chaired the National Clinical Research Institute Surgical Trials group 2009-2015. He was Chair of the Advisory Board (2015-17) and Research Committee Chair ( 2010-16) for the “National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme”.

Professor Scholefield’s private work is based at the BMI Park Hospital and Spire Nottingham Hospital. These busy clinical practices deal mainly with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anal diseases such as fissure, fistula, haemorrhoids and incontinence.

Professor Scholefield has undertaken personal injury and clinical negligence medico legal work for more than ten years, acting for both Claimants and Defendants. Currently he receives around 50 new instructions per year. Medicolegal consultations usually take place in Spire Nottingham Hospital, or by special arrangement in Harley Street W1.
